Hon. Ravi Karunanayake, to ask the Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development.

a)    (i)     The issues pertaining to intrusion of Sri Lankan and Indian fishermen into coastal waters beyond their Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) being resolved on the basis of close bilateral relationship and the humanitarian considerations.  In this respect a Joint Working Group (JWG) has been established and action have been taken to minimize these issues.  In addition, the Sri Lankan fishermen have been released by way of agreement obtained from Home Affairs Ministry in New Delhi.  Through the recommendations forwarded by the Joint Interrogation Committee established for reviewing the details of Sri Lankan fishermen and vessels which are taken into Indian custody.


ii)     Number of Sri Lankan Fishermen in Indian Custody – 36
(Gujarat – 05, Tamil Nadu – 26, Andra Pradesh – 05)
Number of Indian Fishermen detained in Sri Lanka – 08
iii)    Fishing has been carried out by the Sri Lankan Fishermen.
iv)     As the Kachchathivu Island belongs to Sri Lankan territory, Ministry of External Affiars in India has advised to the Indian fishermen to avoid region for fishing purposes.

b)    I) 180,693 persons
ii) Fitted to all multi day fishing vessels (GPS).
iii) There are 4,596 offshore and deep sea fishing vessels. In 2011, number of 3,019 vessels with crew members were insured.  8,636 persons have so far contributed to “Diyawara Diriya” Insurance Scheme which was started in May 2011.


iv) Does not arise.
